Stamps of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

This 1956 set features the Mosque in Hebron, one of Islam's most sacred sites built over the Cave of the Patriarchs. The Government of Jordan issued this set through its Ministry of Post & Communications during a period when Jordan administered the West Bank, including Hebron, following the 1948 Nakba. The stamps showcase the distinctive architecture of this ancient mosque with its characteristic minaret and stone construction. Each denomination displays the same mosque design in different colors - ultramarine for the 1 mil, emerald for the 3 mils, and claret for the 5 mils. All stamps are overprinted with "POSTAGE" to clarify their postal function. The set comprises 8 stamps plus 18 variant records, including varieties with inverted overprints, double overprints, and overprints on both sides. The Arabic inscription identifies this as part of Jordan's mosque definitives denominated in "mils," reflecting the currency system of the time. This issue represents both Jordan's religious heritage and its historical administrative role in the Holy Land during the 1950s.
