This emergency set of handstamped postal markings was issued by the Government of Jordan in 1952 to address a critical shortage of regular postage stamps. The set consists of two double-circle handstamps from different post offices: Amman and Jerusalem. Each handstamp features bilingual text in Arabic and English, including the word "PAID" to indicate postage payment, the respective city name, and the specific date of application. The Amman handstamp shows the date "19 MAY 1953" while the Jerusalem handstamp displays "23 JUL 1952". These provisional postal markings represent an important period in Jordan's postal history when administrative solutions were required to maintain mail services despite supply shortages. The handstamps were applied directly to mail pieces in lieu of adhesive stamps, serving as official proof of postage payment. This type of emergency postal marking demonstrates the practical challenges faced by postal administrations in the early years of Jordan's development as an independent nation, while also highlighting the continued postal operations in Jerusalem during Jordan's administration of the West Bank.
