Stamps of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

This 1950 overprint set features six stamps depicting Emir Abdullah I of Jordan with the Arabic overprint 'Aid' (مساعدة) applied in black ink across the portrait. The overprints were applied to existing definitives showing the formal portrait of the Emir wearing traditional Arab headwear. The set was issued by the Government of Jordan through its Ministry of Post & Communications during a period when Jordan was establishing its postal independence. The stamps comprise three denominations: 5 mils in orange, 10 mils in bright violet, and 15 mils in olive green, each produced in two different varieties with slightly different overprint placements. Several variety records exist showing double overprints, including one notable 10 mils variety with one black and one red overprint. These overprinted stamps represent an important transitional period in Jordanian postal history under the Hashemite Kingdom, when temporary modifications to existing stamp designs were common practice to meet changing postal requirements or commemorate specific circumstances requiring aid or assistance programs.
