Revenue Stamps - Aid Overprint
This 1950 revenue stamp set from the Government of Jordan features stamps overprinted with "Aid" in both English and Arabic, representing Jordan's early post-independence postal administration. The set comprises 5 stamps depicting the ancient ruins at Palmyra, Syria, issued in two denominations: 5 mils in orange and 10 mils in violet. These stamps showcase the classical Roman architectural remains of Palmyra, with its distinctive colonnade and triumphal arch structures that were major archaeological sites of the region. The overprint "Aid" (معونة) was applied to convert these revenue stamps for postal use, a common practice in the early years of the Hashemite Kingdom when postal supplies were limited. The set includes 17 variant records documenting various overprint varieties, including differences in Arabic letter positioning, serif variations in the English "A," and instances of double overprints in different colors. These varieties reflect the manual overprinting process typical of the era and are highly sought after by specialists in Jordanian postal history. The stamps represent an important transitional period in Jordan's postal development, bridging the gap between the British Mandate period and the establishment of a fully independent postal system.
