Stamps of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

This definitive stamp set issued by the Government of Jordan in February 1954 showcases iconic architectural monuments that represent Jordan's cultural and historical heritage. The 13-stamp series features three main subjects: the Treasury of Petra (Al-Khazneh), one of the most famous facades carved into the rose-red sandstone cliffs of the ancient Nabataean city; the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, the golden-domed Islamic shrine built in the 7th century; and Al-Aqsa Mosque, also located in Jerusalem's Old City. Portrait stamps of King Hussein, who had recently ascended to the throne in 1952, are interspersed throughout the series. The stamps display these architectural marvels in various color combinations across different denominations from 1 fils to 500 fils, with ornate decorative borders featuring traditional Islamic geometric patterns. This issue reflects Jordan's role as custodian of Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem and celebrates the kingdom's archaeological treasures, particularly Petra, which would later become a UNESCO World Heritage site.
