This 1953 set of eight stamps was issued by the Government of Jordan featuring Islamic religious architecture, specifically mosques and the Dome of the Rock. The stamps were overprinted with both "PALESTINE" and "POSTAGE" in red or black ink, reflecting the complex territorial and postal arrangements of the period when Jordan administered the West Bank including East Jerusalem following the 1948 Nakba. The set showcases two significant Islamic holy sites: the Mosque in Hebron (al-Haram al-Ibrahimi) and Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock on al-Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary). Each stamp features intricate Islamic architectural details within ornate decorative borders, typical of mid-20th century Jordanian stamp design. The denominations range from 1 mil to 20 mils, printed in various colors including ultramarine, emerald, claret, carmine, grey black, and purple brown. The overprints served both practical postal purposes and symbolic territorial claims. Six additional variety records exist showing printing errors such as inverted, double, or misplaced overprints, making this a philatelically significant issue for specialists in Middle Eastern postal history and overprint varieties.
