Tragedy in the Holy Lands
This powerful set of 12 stamps, issued by the Government of Jordan on July 18, 1976, documents the devastating impact of the June 1967 Six-Day War on sacred and historic sites in the Holy Lands. Titled 'Tragedy in the Holy Lands,' the set serves as both a memorial and a statement of protest against the destruction of religious and cultural heritage. The stamps depict scenes of bombed mosques, wrecked buildings, abandoned homes, and damaged infrastructure, with one particularly poignant image showing an injured child in a hospital bed. Several stamps show the aftermath of destruction with the iconic Dome of the Rock visible in the background, emphasizing the religious significance of the affected areas. A damaged post office and surgery ward illustrate how essential services were disrupted. The stamps are surcharged, with most denominated at 25 fils and two higher values at 40 fils. This issue represents Jordan's commitment to documenting and commemorating the human cost of conflict in the region, particularly its impact on places of worship and archaeological sites. The set includes 30 stamps and 1 variant/imperforate record, making it a comprehensive documentation of wartime devastation in historically significant areas.
