Tragedy in the Holy Lands
This powerful stamp set, issued by the Government of Jordan on December 10, 1969, documents the destruction and human suffering in the Holy Lands following the 1967 Six-Day War. The Arabic title 'أثر النكبة على الأماكن المقدسة والأثرية' translates to 'The Impact of the Catastrophe on the Holy Places and Historical Sites.' The 30 stamps present a sobering visual record of bombed mosques, destroyed homes, abandoned buildings, and damaged infrastructure across occupied territories. Each stamp depicts scenes of devastation with remarkable detail - from collapsed roofs and rubble-strewn streets to broken windows and structural damage. The imagery includes both religious and civilian architecture, emphasizing the widespread nature of the destruction. One particularly poignant stamp shows an injured child in a hospital bed, highlighting the human cost of the conflict. The Dome of the Rock appears in the background of one stamp, connecting the destruction to Jerusalem's sacred sites. The set includes 6 souvenir sheets alongside the regular stamps. This issue serves as both a political statement and historical documentation, reflecting Jordan's perspective on the aftermath of the 1967 war and its impact on Palestinian communities and holy sites.
