Jerash Antiquities
This 1965 set of eight stamps was issued by the Government of Jordan to showcase the magnificent ancient ruins of Jerash, one of the world's best-preserved Roman provincial cities. Located in northern Jordan, Jerash (ancient Gerasa) was a prominent member of the Decapolis, a league of ten Roman cities that flourished from the 1st century CE. The stamps feature multicolored photographs of the site's most iconic architectural monuments, including the Cathedral Steps, the imposing gate of the Temple of Artemis with its towering columns, the famous Cardo Maximus (Street of Columns) that runs through the city center, the dramatic South Theatre with its semicircular seating, the distinctive oval Forum with its surrounding colonnade, and the monumental Triumphal Arch that marks the southern entrance to the ancient city. Each stamp bears the same 55 fils denomination and depicts these archaeological treasures against blue skies, emphasizing their grandeur and state of preservation. The issue includes 18 additional variant and imperforate records. This philatelic tribute helped promote Jordan's rich classical heritage and growing tourism industry during the 1960s, highlighting Jerash as a major archaeological destination that rivals Petra in historical significance.
