Stamps of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

This commemorative set of five stamps, issued by the Government of Jordan on December 29, 1982, celebrates the magnificent Roman ruins at Jerash, one of the world's best-preserved examples of Roman provincial architecture. Jerash, known in antiquity as Gerasa, was a major city of the Roman Decapolis and flourished from the 1st to 3rd centuries CE. Each stamp in the set features a portrait of King Hussein alongside a different archaeological monument from this remarkable site. The 10 fils depicts the iconic colonnaded street with its towering columns, while the 25 fils shows the impressive triple-arched gateway. The 40 fils features the majestic Temple of Artemis with its soaring columns, the 50 fils displays the well-preserved Roman amphitheater carved into the hillside, and the 100 fils presents the ancient hippodrome where chariot races once thrilled spectators. This philatelic tribute underscored Jordan's commitment to preserving its rich archaeological heritage and promoting cultural tourism. The inclusion of King Hussein's portrait on each stamp emphasizes the Hashemite Kingdom's role as guardian of these ancient treasures, which continue to attract visitors from around the world and represent Jordan's significant place in classical antiquity.

تحتفل هذه المجموعة التذكارية المكونة من خمسة طوابع، والتي أصدرتها الحكومة الأردنية في 29 ديسمبر 1982، بالآثار الرومانية الرائعة في جرش، التي تعتبر من أفضل الأمثلة المحفوظة للعمارة الرومانية الإقليمية في العالم. كانت جرش، المعروفة في العصور القديمة باسم جراسا، مدينة رئيسية في الديكابوليس الروماني وازدهرت من القرن الأول إلى الثالث الميلادي. يعرض كل طابع في المجموعة صورة للملك حسين إلى جانب نصب أثري مختلف من هذا الموقع الرائع. يصور طابع العشرة فلوس الشارع المعمد الشهير بأعمدته الشاهقة، بينما يعرض طابع الخمسة والعشرين فلساً البوابة المثيرة للإعجاب ذات الأقواس الثلاثة. يعرض طابع الأربعين فلساً معبد أرتميس المهيب بأعمدته الشاهقة، ويعرض طابع الخمسين فلساً المدرج الروماني المحفوظ جيداً والمنحوت في سفح التل، بينما يقدم طابع المئة فلس الهيبودروم القديم حيث كانت سباقات العربات تثير المتفرجين قديماً.
