Tragedy of the Refugees
This poignant set of 12 stamps, issued by the Government of Jordan on July 18, 1976, depicts the tragic experiences of Palestinian refugees following the 1948 Nakba and subsequent displacement. Each stamp portrays heart-wrenching scenes of refugee life: destroyed homes and infrastructure, families fleeing with their possessions, dangerous river crossings, medical care for the wounded, and the particular vulnerability of children during displacement. The artwork emphasizes human suffering and resilience, showing mothers protecting their children, fathers carrying their families to safety, villagers helping each other cross bridges and wade through waters, and medical personnel treating the injured. This commemorative issue serves as both a historical record and a humanitarian statement, highlighting Jordan's role in hosting Palestinian refugees and drawing international attention to their ongoing plight. The stamps' realistic artistic style and muted color palettes reinforce the somber subject matter, making this one of Jordan's most emotionally powerful philatelic tributes to the Palestinian refugee experience.
