Tragedy of the Refugees
This poignant stamp set issued by the Government of Jordan in December 1969 commemorates the tragedy and suffering of Palestinian refugees, depicting scenes of displacement, destruction, and human perseverance. The 30 stamps portray the harsh realities faced by refugees fleeing their homes, showing destroyed buildings, damaged vehicles including a Red Crescent ambulance, and families carrying their possessions and children as they wade through rivers and cross bridges to safety. The images capture both the devastation left behind and the resilience of those forced to abandon their homes, with scenes of mothers protecting children, fathers carrying their families to safety, and villagers helping each other escape. The set includes 6 souvenir sheets featuring the same powerful imagery. Each stamp bears the bilingual title 'The Tragedy and the Plight of the Refugees' in English and Arabic, emphasizing the humanitarian crisis and drawing international attention to the refugee situation. This issue represents Jordan's commitment to highlighting the Palestinian refugee crisis and serves as both a historical document and a call for international awareness of the ongoing humanitarian challenges in the region.
