This commemorative set of five stamps and one souvenir sheet was issued by the Government of Jordan in 1966 to honor Pope Paul VI's historic visit to the United Nations headquarters in New York on October 4, 1965. This groundbreaking papal visit marked the first time a Pope had addressed the United Nations General Assembly, where Paul VI delivered his famous peace message calling for an end to war and the promotion of global harmony. The stamps feature three prominent religious leaders in oval portraits: Pope Paul VI in the center, King Hussein of Jordan on the right representing Islam, and what appears to be an Orthodox Patriarch on the left representing Eastern Christianity. This interfaith presentation symbolizes the ecumenical spirit and dialogue between the world's major religious traditions that the Pope's UN visit embodied. The background depicts Jerusalem's iconic skyline with its distinctive domes and minarets, emphasizing the city's significance to all three Abrahamic faiths. The stamps were printed in different colors across five denominations (10, 15, 25, 50, and 80 fils), with each featuring the same design but in varying color schemes. One variety exists with overprint offset on the reverse. The souvenir sheet contains all five denominations in an attractive presentation format.
