This commemorative set of four stamps was issued by the Government of Jordan on September 23, 1965, to showcase the Dead Sea region and its historical significance. The stamps highlight key features of this unique geographical and archaeological area, including scenic views of the Dead Sea itself with its distinctive shoreline and mineral-rich waters, the lush oasis landscapes with palm trees and traditional boats, the famous Qumran caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, and the ancient scrolls themselves. The Dead Sea, located at the lowest point on Earth's surface, holds immense historical and religious importance as the site where the Essenes preserved these invaluable biblical manuscripts for nearly two millennia. Each stamp in the set carries a denomination of 35 fils and features vibrant multicolored designs with decorative Arabic borders. The issue was also produced in imperforate varieties, creating a total of 10 catalogue records. This philatelic tribute captures both the natural wonder of the Dead Sea and its profound archaeological legacy, making it an important issue for collectors interested in Middle Eastern history, biblical archaeology, and Jordanian tourism themes.
