Olympic Games, Tokyo (2nd Issue)
This commemorative set of eight stamps and one souvenir sheet was issued by the Government of Jordan on November 21, 1964, to honor the XVIII Olympic Games held in Tokyo from October 10-24, 1964. This represents Jordan's second philatelic tribute to the Tokyo Olympics, following an earlier issue. The stamps feature a unified design centered on the Olympic flame burning in a ceremonial torch, positioned above the iconic five Olympic rings, symbolizing the unity of the five continents in Olympic competition. The triangular format of the stamps creates a distinctive presentation that emphasizes the upward reach of the flame. Each denomination displays the same symbolic motif in different colors, from the low values of 1-5 fils to the higher denominations of 35, 50, and 100 fils. The set includes both English and Arabic text identifying the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and referencing the Tokyo Olympics. The 1964 Tokyo Olympics were particularly significant as the first Olympics held in Asia, marking Japan's return to the international community after World War II. Jordan's participation in these games, though modest, represented the young nation's growing engagement with the international sporting community during the reign of King Hussein.
