This commemorative set was issued by the Government of Jordan on April 7, 1960, to mark World Refugee Year, a global initiative declared by the United Nations to draw international attention to the plight of refugees worldwide. The campaign ran from July 1959 to June 1960, seeking to promote solutions for refugee problems and encourage international cooperation in refugee assistance. Jordan, having hosted significant refugee populations throughout its history, particularly Palestinian refugees following the 1948 Nakba, was deeply invested in this humanitarian cause. Both stamps feature the official World Refugee Year emblem - a stylized design showing a protective shelter with human figures surrounded by olive branches, symbolizing hope and protection for displaced persons. The emblem appears in different color schemes across the two denominations, with the 15 fils stamp displaying the design in red against a grey-blue background, while the 35 fils stamp presents it in blue against a bistre background. This issue reflects Jordan's commitment to refugee welfare and its support for international humanitarian efforts during a critical period when global awareness of refugee issues was being heightened.
