Olympic Games, Tokyo (1st Issue)
الألعاب الأولمبية في طوكيو (الاصدار الأول)
This commemorative set of eight stamps and one souvenir sheet was issued by the Government of Jordan on June 1, 1964, to honor the XVIII Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan, that year. The 1964 Tokyo Olympics marked a significant milestone as the first Olympics held in Asia and represented Japan's return to the international community following World War II. Jordan's participation in these games reflected the young kingdom's growing engagement with the international sporting community under King Hussein's leadership. The stamps feature various Olympic sports depicted in distinctive monochromatic designs, each rendered in a different color scheme. The sports represented include basketball, volleyball, football (soccer), table tennis, running, cycling, fencing, and pole vaulting. Each stamp displays the Olympic rings prominently, connecting Jordan's athletic aspirations to the global Olympic movement. The designs show athletes in action, capturing the dynamic nature of Olympic competition. The highest denomination of 100 fils features pole vaulting, while the same subject appears on the 200 fils souvenir sheet in light blue. This issue demonstrates Jordan's support for international athletics and the Olympic ideals of peaceful competition among nations during the height of the Cold War era.
