Pope Paul's Visit to the Holy Land
This commemorative set of four stamps was issued by the Government of Jordan on January 4, 1964, to honor Pope Paul VI's historic visit to the Holy Land. The visit, which took place from January 4-6, 1964, was the first papal pilgrimage to the Holy Land in modern times and marked a significant moment in interfaith relations and Middle Eastern diplomacy. Each stamp features dual portraits of Pope Paul VI and King Hussein of Jordan, flanked by decorative wheat sheaves, symbolizing the peaceful nature of this religious and diplomatic encounter. The stamps showcase three of the most sacred sites in Jerusalem: the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, representing the Islamic and Christian holy places that the Pope visited during his pilgrimage. The set was issued in four denominations (15, 35, 50, and 80 fils) printed in different colors - emerald green, cerise pink, brown, and violet blue respectively. A souvenir sheet was also produced containing all four designs. The issue demonstrates Jordan's role as guardian of the holy sites and its commitment to religious tolerance and international cooperation during this landmark papal visit.
