This commemorative set celebrates Petra, Jordan's ancient Nabataean capital and archaeological crown jewel. Known as the 'Rose City' for its distinctive pink sandstone facades, Petra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, just a decade before this issue. The Government of Jordan released this four-stamp set and souvenir sheet to showcase the site's most iconic monuments and archaeological treasures to international audiences. The stamps feature Petra's legendary Treasury (Al-Khazneh), the Roman-era amphitheater carved into living rock, precious Nabataean artifacts, and the magnificent Monastery (Ad-Deir) perched high in the mountains. Each stamp captures the remarkable architectural achievement of the Nabataeans, who carved elaborate facades directly into the rose-colored cliffs between the 4th century BC and 1st century AD. This philatelic tribute reflects Jordan's pride in its archaeological heritage and its efforts to promote cultural tourism to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, emphasizing Petra's significance as both a historical treasure and a symbol of Jordanian national identity.
تحتفي هذه المجموعة التذكارية بالبتراء، العاصمة النبطية القديمة وجوهرة الأردن الأثرية. تُعرف البتراء باسم 'المدينة الوردية' نسبة إلى واجهاتها المميزة من الحجر الرملي الوردي، وقد أُدرجت في قائمة التراث العالمي لليونسكو عام 1985، أي قبل عقد من صدور هذه المجموعة. أصدرت الحكومة الأردنية هذه المجموعة المكونة من أربعة طوابع وبطاقة تذكارية لعرض أشهر المعالم والكنوز الأثرية للموقع أمام الجماهير الدولية. تُظهر الطوابع خزنة البتراء الأسطورية والمدرج الروماني المنحوت في الصخر الحي والتحف النبطية الثمينة والدير الرائع المطل من أعالي الجبال. يُسلط هذا الإصدار الفيلاتيلي الضوء على فخر الأردن بتراثه الأثري وجهوده لتعزيز السياحة الثقافية إلى إحدى عجائب الدنيا السبع الجديدة.
