This definitive set of eight stamps issued by the Government of Jordan in 1996 features Hadrian's Arch (Arch of Triumph) in the ancient city of Jerash. The stamps showcase this magnificent Roman triumphal arch, one of Jordan's most important archaeological monuments from the ancient city of Gerasa. Built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian around 129-130 CE to commemorate his visit, the arch stands as a testament to Jordan's rich Greco-Roman heritage. Each stamp in the set displays the same detailed illustration of the imposing three-arched gateway rendered in brown tones, with different background colors distinguishing the various denominations from 50 to 400 fils. The stamps bear both Gregorian (1996) and Hijri (1416) dates, reflecting Jordan's cultural duality. Jerash, often called the 'Pompeii of the East,' is one of the world's best-preserved Roman provincial towns, and this definitive series helped promote Jordan's archaeological treasures to both domestic and international audiences. The set served practical postal needs while celebrating the kingdom's role as custodian of significant world heritage sites.
